Remaining on a high precipice on the right bank of the Ganga a short separation from its intersection with the Burhganga, the town lies in Lat. 280 47' North and Long. 780 6' East, 65 kms. east of the locale head quarter and 32 kms east of Hapur. Something like 2 kms west of the town the metalled way impending from Meerut meets the national interstate which hails from Delhi by means of Hapur (and goes on to Moradabad crossing the Ganga at Garhmukteshwar by method for the span constructed in 1961).

There will be a line station at Garhmukteshwar on the Delhi-Moradabad line of the Northern Railway. Garhmukteshwar is aplace of ancient vestige, notice being made of it in the Bhagvat Purana and the Mahabharata. It is said that it was a piece of the antiquated city of Hastinapur (the capital of the Kauravas).

There was an old fortification here which was repaired by a Maratha pioneer named Mir Bhawan and was in so great a condition when the british took ownership of the place that it was discovered conceivable to spot the tahsil in it without causing much expence on modification. The name of the spot is inferred from the extraordinary sanctuary of Mukteshwar Mahadeva, devoted to the goddess Ganga who is adored here in four sanctuaries, two suitated on a high precipice and two blow it. The one near the Meerut way has a well , the water of which is belived to be so consecrated as to wash down the since of the individuals who bathe with it; close it are eighty sati columns, denoting the spots where Hindu widows are said to have ended up sati. There is in the town a mosque buikt by Ghayas-ud-clamor Balban bearing an engraving in Arabic with the date 682 Hijri
